ZANIS News covers latrine access in Pemba District

ZANIS News covers latrine access in Pemba District

By Akros Media on January 12, 2018 in News, Water and Sanitation Health

Below is a video news report on the need for latrine coverage in areas of Zambia’s Pemba District. Akros staffer Annie Mutunda was on hand to help explain the necessity for such coverage.

Akros helped make around 120 district maps using enumeration data and also GRID3 data. We know these maps will prove invaluable to get ahead on vector control in advance of the annual rainy season!
Thanks for joining us on this journey that “live Thanks for joining us on this journey that “live” tracked how we use Reveal to plan, deploy, and evaluate household-level health interventions! Past, present, and future applications of Reveal include its use for mass drug administration for malaria and neglected tropical disease control, indoor residual spraying, immunization campaigns, insecticide-treated bed net distribution, and behavior change communication. We hope you enjoyed getting an inside look at not only how Reveal is bringing geospatial intelligence to the ground for use in health interventions, but also how Reveal makes use of an entire suite of digital tools to organize teams, streamline efforts, and automate analyses of outcomes.
And that’s a wrap on the field campaign for our And that’s a wrap on the field campaign for our “live” tracking of a health intervention simulation using Reveal! But not so fast! Just because the field work has been completed, doesn’t mean that the project is completely finished. On the contrary, the work to evaluate and analyze the results of team efforts has just begun. Teams are now using the data and visualizations against the previous year’s data to report up to high-level Ministry of Health officials and to draw conclusions about intervention progress over time. These data can also be layered with coverage data from other related interventions, and subsequently with caseload data from nearby health clinics to obtain a more complete portrait of intervention impact.
Let’s jump back into where we left off with the Let’s jump back into where we left off with the “live” tracking of a health intervention simulation using Reveal—it’s time to mop up! Revisiting or “mopping-up” spray areas is critical in areas that did not achieve sufficiently high intervention coverage during initial deployment efforts. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but the most common causes are inclement weather that impacted the ability to achieve the desired level of coverage, or that people were not at home when the field teams came knocking. Mop up campaigns can be costly, so the need for accurate, real-time spatial data to inform these mop ups and protocols to drive them is critical. Reveal assists in these efforts by providing digestible data reports to mid- and high-level managers in near real time, who are then able to use these analyses to redeploy teams to mop up areas that didn’t receive sufficient coverage before the campaign concludes. Seen below, indoor residual spraying (IRS) teams are checking the Reveal UI to ensure that their mop up activities for the day have reached the desired levels for a village targeted during the 2017 spray season. For interventions such as IRS and immunization campaigns, this can mean the difference between a community attaining “herd immunity” or having gaps in coverage rendering the intervention less effective.
Let’s check back in with the “live” tracking Let’s check back in with the “live” tracking of our health intervention simulation using Reveal, shall we? One of the most useful parts of using Reveal for interventions is the ability to track its progress in real-time. Field teams carry tablets equipped with GPS and a mobile user version of Reveal that guides them to targeted households and allows them to tag delivery or non-delivery of services against that household. Data is then synced from each tablet and combined on the main database. This means that at any point during the field campaign, district, provincial, and central-level administrators are able to log into their customized dashboards and get both summarized and granular data on campaign progress, stylized in easy-to-digest graphs and visuals. Seen below in pre-COVID-19 pandemic times, Akros’ own Frazer Bwalya is training these administrators on how to make the most of their dashboards.
Rain delay! Some of the richest irony in our line Rain delay! Some of the richest irony in our line of work is that, even when you have state-of-the-art tools that can provide accurate population counts, plan your intervention out down to the smallest detail, track deployment, and provide true coverage rates, sometimes Mother Nature just won’t cooperate. The nature of work in remote areas means that oftentimes the roads needed to reach villages are easily flooded by heavy rains, rendering efforts to reach them with field teams impossible until they have dried. While we take pains to plan interventions around historical rainy seasons, sometimes these things happen. Our teams closely monitor the forecasts and use Reveal to re-plan campaigns based on the new conditions, and make their second attempt at reaching the community once the roads have dried up. Seen here in Zambia’s Eastern Province in 2018, our indoor residual spraying teams are ready to head back out to cover those households now that the rain has passed.
