A Low-Cost Platform for Administering Land Rights

A Low-Cost Platform for Administering Land Rights

By Andy Prinsen on December 12, 2017 in Capacity Building, Health Data Systems, News

How can the same sort of systems we use to collect and organize health data from rural areas be used to collect and organize land use? Why is land use important for development? Check out this recent article from “The Best of Africa” blog to learn some of those answers and more!

Instagram post 2195775528262052436_19004627 Rubber plantations, such as these in the Greater Mekong Subregion, make great habitats for malaria-carrying mosquitoes, meaning people who work within these plantations may be at risk of contracting malaria. Reveal offers a geospatial surveillance approach that can help government programs and teams track and respond to malaria cases in such areas.
Instagram post 2193765793593181112_19004627 It's National Handwashing Awareness Week! Good handwashing practice is one of the best ways to fight trachoma. Who remembers our work with Sightsavers on a DFID-funded trachoma elimination program in Zambia? Together we helped reinforce these practices in schools at the community level. Instagram post 2186299788936329355_19004627 We had a great ASTMH this year; on Day 1, Akros hosted a workshop that focused on spatial intelligence approaches used for malaria, polio, and NTDs. Over 130 people attended! Thanks to technical work group members who attended from USAID, BMGF, Abt Associates, and E8, as well as group chairs from PSI, IVCC, the Global Taskforce for NTDs, University of Oxford, and VitalWave. Our presenters were especially great! A big thank you to PATH-MACEPA, Zambia Ministry of Health, Maxar, CDC and UCSF-MEI. We also got the opportunity to share about Reveal and receive input on how the platform can be used to solve new challenges. Here at Akros, we're excited to continue to work with you all to grow the implementation of spatial intelligence and improve health service delivery!
Instagram post 2178000079528386415_19004627 Did you know that it's #osmgeoweek? Map lovers in the US and around the world are coming together to celebrate geography and make maps with @OpenStreetMap, the free and openly-editable world map. Akros and our partners are no exception. Over the years, Akros and teams have mapped over 1 million structures in OSM across multiple countries. We've used OSM enumeration to build a base layer for maps for the Reveal tool, which helps teams geographically locate and target individual households for a variety of health interventions, ultimately guiding teams right to their front doorstep.
Instagram post 2171838300167258569_19004627 Reveal supports smart delivery of targeted interventions—pretty important for malaria elimination! Akros is implementing Reveal with our DSME partners in the Greater Mekong Subregion this season. Teams will utilize Reveal's innovative geospatial technology to enhance planning of targeted malaria interventions and focus investigations, and drive impact through increased coverage and real-time monitoring in the field.
Instagram post 2157690413838099879_19004627 The Reveal team is rolling out support for focus investigations! In areas where malaria incidence is nearing elimination, it becomes important to improve granularity of surveillance, particularly in malaria hot spots or "foci." Here, our team is training malaria program team members on how to map where these foci are, using digital geospatial tools like OpenStreetMap.
